Chapter 56 is the fourth episode of Season 5 of House of Cards. It originally aired on May 30, 2017, along with the rest of the fifth season.

Synopsis[]

With a tight race and low voter turnout on Election Day, things look grim for Frank. But he's got one more trick up his sleeve.

Summary[]

The credits to "Double Indemnity" begin rolling, but Claire and Frank have left the viewing room to deal with the low voter turnout on Election Day.

Meanwhile, Conway is given good news, that the low voter turnout is working in his favor. However, Conway remains cautious. After having sex, Hannah refers to him as "Mr. President".

Frank calls the governor of Tennessee, Mitch Scanlon, and tells him that the White House has raided the home of a suspected terrorist (from the previous episode), and they have found bomb-making material. They suspect that he could attack polling stations at any time, which leads to the polls being shut down.

A bomb goes off at a Tennessee polling station in Knoxville, injuring several, putting the newly emerging Tennessee results into question.

Frank is able to convince the Governor Scanlon to shut down voting and declare a state of emergency. A curfew is enacted, much to Conway's dismay.

Amidst terrorist threats, the Ohio governor closes down the polling stations while Frank sits back and pretend that he doesn’t want that to happen. Frank then calls Conway to concede the election. But as more states hold their election results in the wake of terrorist threats, the election remains contested as the sun rises.

Meanwhile, we flash back to earlier election day, when Frank and Claire discuss remaining in power for years to come by abolishing term limits.
