Chapter 57 is the fifth episode of Season 5 of House of Cards. It originally aired on May 30, 2017, along with the rest of the fifth season.

Synopsis[]

Nine weeks after Election Day, the Underwoods work to consolidate their power. Leann tries to track down a missing Aidan Macallan.

Summary[]

It's mid-January, nine weeks since the historic no-decision in the presidential election. People are chanting 'not my President' outside the gates of the White House. Frank explains that in an event where neither candidate reaches a majority of electoral votes, the House decides who will become President. Each state will get one vote for President, and the first to surpass 26 votes will become President, and the Senate chooses the Vice President.

Conway, meanwhile, believes he was fairly elected and should be President.

Frank meets with Eric, who played Augustus Underwood in the civil war re-enactment years ago.  The two bond over the president’s replica battlefield before Eric tells Frank that everything he said about Augustus Underwood was untrue. Frank laughs this off and the two discuss the protestors outside.

LeAnn informs Claire that the President's approval rating has fallen to 19%, just barely higher than Congress's approval rating, but still lower than Claire's 30% approval rating. Claire remains optimistic about her and Frank's chances, despite the looming threats of a Republican filibuster of the Vice-President vote & a split-ticket in the Executive branch.

However, Democratic congresspeople are worried that Conway, who is much more popular than Frank, will win the House vote, but Claire would win the Senate, resulting in a split ticket, putting the country further into mayhem. Claire argues that there should be a Democrat in the executive branch to keep the Republicans in check.

Claire discovers that Tom is at a bar with a woman, and asks for Secret Service to send her a video of it.

Hammerschmidt meets with Lisa Williams, Rachel's former lover. Lisa comes with information regarding Doug, but Hammerschmidt is hesitant to believe her.

Frank talks to Alex Romero, a Democratic congressman who Frank tries to get to sway other Democratic congresspeople.

Aidan, who has been missing for a while now, calls LeAnn to tell her that he will leak incriminating information on the Underwood's if she doesn't get the authorities off his back.

While LeAnn is able to flip Maine, Doug fails to win New Hampshire, leading Frank to question Doug's loyalty. Frank later apologizes for being out of line.

The day of the vote, Claire asks Vice President Blythe to prevent a filibuster and keep Republicans off the floor, but when Blythe refuses, Claire begins insulting him and his late wife. Blythe seems indifferent to her insults, and claims that there is a 'nt' missing from her initials.

Neither Conway nor Frank receive 26 votes in the House vote, meaning that the Senate's Vice Presidential selection between Claire and Ted Brockhart will immediately ascend to the Presidency and serve until the House votes again.
